Lecture Details

The presentation will provide brief information about Cranfield University as a whole, and sectors relevant to gas turbine technologies. The focus will be on the Centre Propulsion where the educational and research activities on gas turbine engineering are hosted. Some details of educational activities including MSc and PhD programmes, and research activities including gas turbine performance simulation, gas path diagnostics, novel cycles and experimental facilities will be presented.

Dr Li specializes in gas turbine gas path diagnostics, gas turbine steady and transient performance simulations, performance optimization and application of Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) to gas turbine engines.

He received his BSc from Naming University of Aeronautics and Astronautics, China in 1984, MSc Degree from Northwestern Polytechnical University, China in 1989, and was awarded PhD degree at Cranfield University, UK in 2000. He used to work as a gas turbine performance engineer for many years before joining Cranfield University in 1999. He has worked on different projects at Cranfield University, including Low Emissions Combustion Control for Aero Gas Turbines (LECCAGT) sponsored by DTI, Lucas Aerospace and Rolls-Royce, and a Platform Grant on gas turbine thermodynamic performance sponsored by EPSRC, UK.

He has been working on gas turbine gas path diagnostics since 2001 and has led a team developing different gas path diagnostic techniques. His team has also made a major contribution to the development of gas path diagnostic software called Pythia that can be used for performance simulation and gas path diagnostics of different gas turbine engines. His research has been funded by industrial and aerospace industry, such as Manx Electricity Authority in the UK and China Aviation Powerplant Research Institute.

He has published more than 60 technical papers in international journals and conferences where three of his papers have received Best Paper Award of the Cycle Innovations Committee of ASME Turbo Expo conference. He is a member of ASME and a Fellow of Higher Education Academy of United.
