Dr. Joe Liu
Research & Development
Dr. Joe Liu earned a Ph.D. in Thermal Energy Engineering from Xi’an Jiaotong University in China in 1989, and a Ph.D. in Mechanics from the University of Minnesota in USA in 1995.
Since joining 3M in its Minnesota headquarters in 1995 as a senior research engineer, Dr. Liu has held positions with increasing responsibilities in multiple 3M operations, including Laboratory Manager in the corporate research materials laboratory, Head of 3M China’s R&D Center, and Technical Director of 3M China and 3M Hong Kong. In 2008, Dr. Liu was appointed as Vice President of R&D for 3M Asia Pacific and China Region, and a member of the 3M Executive Conference. In 2013, he was appointed as Vice President of R&D for 3M International leading R&D operations in 36 countries around the world with about 4000 technical employees.
Dr. Liu has 28 issued U.S. patents and 36 technical publications. From 2006-2008, he served as a Shanghai Municipality Government Science and Technology Development Consultation Expert, and received the Magnolia Award from Shanghai City. He currently serves on the board of directors for AEON Corporation, and on the Advisory Board for KAUST (King Abdullah University of Science and Technology, Saudi Arabia) Industrial Partnership.
