报告一: Enabling smart, renewable and sustainable energy technologies – My viewpoint and plans based on experience in industry and academia
Abstract: The Paris Agreement prioritises finance, technology and capacity-building to rapidly deploy smart, renewable and sustainable energy technologies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. This has been the focus of my work in industry and academia for most of my career as an engineer. Based on my industry and academic experience I predict that as these technologies grow the energy system will be restructured by innovations, some disruptive and some not, that move us away from over-reliance on fossil fuels. This will occur by force and naturally over different time resolutions in each level of the energy system. This is because fossil fuels will become prohibitive as taxes rise, demand outstrips supply and exploration costs rise irrespective of the environment and climate change.
The challenge across every part of society is to provide workable equitable solutions to meet the growing global energy demand while balancing all the socio-, techno-economic and environmental needs. In my opinion these demands and needs are currently juxtaposed to compete. However, the aim of my research in energy systems analysis is to find communality between these competing forces to build harmony so that smart, renewable and sustainable energy technologies are realised. In all aspects of my research, teaching and enterprise work I examine these technologies to identify the techno-economic conditions and policy strategies needed to achieve successful uptake. The focus of this work at the moment is electricity, transport and gas systems. However, more recently I have expanded this to include heating and cooling processes.
In this talk I will first discuss my research, teaching and enterprise experiences, activities and future plans in light of my goal to find communality so that smart, renewable and sustainable energy technologies are realised in my lifetime. Next I will then map my industry and academic career path to date and the forces that have driven my research interests to give a taste of the approaches and techniques I use in my work and why. I then will set out my research vision and provide some examples and specific findings of my research, teaching and enterprise activities in energy systems analysis. I will also describe how my national and international research, teaching and enterprise collaborations, as well as my role as Editor in Chief of Elsevier’s Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews are supporting my research vision to make true impact in the field of energy. I will follow with an overview of the opportunities in my research group and for undergraduates at Queen’s University Belfast. Finally, I will summarise and conclude my talk and answer any questions.
